The Gem and Mineral Society of Louisiana[2], which was established in 1960, certainly knows how to put on a show!! This was their 54th exhibit. The Society notes that it focuses on “…Earth Science, Geology and Mineralogy, the purpose of [which] is to educate our community on the beauty of Earth Sciences by way of collection, preservation and [to] provide teachings of all facets of lapidary arts.” Notice their emphasis on education.
Although the weather was rainy and soggy all weekend the 2nd-4th of October, it was an exciting show and while inside the Alario Center we could forget the weather for awhile.
This show featured precious gems, Louisiana opals, minerals, fossils, and beads and jewelry, like Jo is checking out below. Prices ranged from $1.00 to to $18,000! Absolutely something for everyone.

Kids digging for treasure
An online note explains that: “This event is perfect for families, mineral collectors, gem enthusiasts, and anyone curious about the world and its creations. [There are] hundreds of displays of various minerals, crystals, handcrafted jewelry, and one-of-a-kind treasures from across the region. That’s not all—the show offers much more than just browsing. Attendees can enjoy live geode cracking, gemstone mining, educational displays for the kiddos, and other interactive activities. Collectors can shop for rare specimens and lapidary supplies. Whether you’re a self-proclaimed geologist or a rookie just looking for a good time, there is something for everyone.[3]

Trade Name: Yooperlite Moon Sphere; geologically, syenite clasts containing fluorescent sodalite.
Please remember, just because you’re a marble collector, you can always enjoy a good gem and mineral browse, and you can always meet new people as fanatic about a rock as you are about a CAC.

“I came for the history. I stayed for the shiny rocks.”
- We don’t believe it odd that we have long recommended visiting rock and mineral shows and adding both to your marble collection. We have written about the topic before in our stories Why Not Dirt & Rocks?, Fun with Mineral Marbles & More Fun With Mineral Marbles. We know that you will enjoy browsing mineral shows and adding at least a few mineral and gemstones to your collection—well, perhaps not over 100 different gem and mineral spheres like we have! ↑
